4 Tips to Optimize Your Google Drive Storage and Get the Most Out of It

Do you have a Google Drive account? If yes, then you have come to the right place because today, we are going to share with you four tips that you can use to optimize your Google Drive storage and get the most out of it. So, let’s get started.

Delete Big Attachments

Most people don’t know that Gmail and Google Drive don’t have separate storage quota. It means that all the emails, along with its attachments, are counted in your Google Drive storage quota. Therefore, you must delete all unnecessary emails with big attachments to save your storage space on Google Drive. To find these big attachments:

  1. Open your web browser and log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Now tap on the down arrow, which is located in the search bar to open the “Advanced search” menu of Gmail.
  3. Next, select the “Has attachment” option.
  4. Now enter the size of the attachment like 10 to 15 MB.
  5. Next, tap on the “Search” button to find all those emails that have attachments whose size is greater than 15 MB.
  6. Now select the emails that you wish to delete and tap on the “Delete” button.
  7. You have successfully deleted your selected emails with their attachments.

Note: Ensure that you delete these emails from the “Trash” too.

Convert Your Stored Documents

The next thing that you can do to optimize your Google Drive storage is to convert all your documents which you created with Microsoft Office suite to Google Docs format. Why? Because Google does not count these documents as a part of your Google Drive storage quota. So, if you have stored Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations, then it’s time to convert them so that you can save your precious Google Drive storage space. For example: To convert your Excel Spreadsheet to a Google Sheet:

  1. Open your web browser and log in to your Google Drive account.
  2. Next, find your stored Excel Spreadsheet and right-click on it.
  3. Now tap on the “Open with” option and then select the Google Sheets option.
  4. Next tap on the “File” tab and tap on the “Save as Google Sheets” option.
  5. You have successfully converted your Excel Spreadsheet to a Google Sheet.

Use Google Photos to Upload Photos & Videos in High-Quality

If you use Google Photos to store your photos and videos, then you can easily save your Google Drive storage if you convert them in high-quality. Why? Because Google does not include high-quality photos and videos in your Google Drive storage quota. However, if your stored photos and videos are not of high-quality, then Google will count the space occupied by those photos and videos as a part of your Google Drive storage quota.

So, make sure you only store high-quality photos and videos in Google Photos to save your Google Drive storage quota. You can also convert your already stored photos and videos in high-quality using Google Photos. To do this:

  1. Visit the Google Photos website and tap on the hamburger icon.
  2. Now tap on “Settings.”
  3. Next, enable the “High-quality” option.
  4. Finally, tap on the “Recover Storage” button to convert your photos and videos to high-quality.

Delete Your App Data

Have you connected any app with your Google Drive account? If yes, then these apps might be consuming your precious storage behind your back. How? The data of these apps are usually hidden in Google Drive, so you never realize that these apps are consuming your Google Drive storage behind your back. However, you can quickly delete this hidden data from your Google Drive account. To do this:

  1. Log in to your Google Drive account and tap on the gear icon.
  2. Now tap on “Settings.”
  3. Next, tap on the “Manage Apps” option to view your apps.
  4. Now tap on the “Options” link near any app that you think is consuming your precious Google Drive space.
  5. Finally, tap on the “Delete hidden app data” option to delete its data.
