5 Tips for a Successful Knee Replacement Recovery

If you have had a knee replacement you need to take a few precautions to protect your knees. Once the operation is complete it is solely up to you to decide how hard you are going to work at recovery. Rehab for a knee replacement surgery starts immediately after your surgery.

Below are some tips which can help you with a successful knee replacement recovery.

  1. Use a Walker or Cane- A walker or cane will ensure that you do not fall and damage the new knee. Walkers and canes will also help you in moving around in public spaces and provide you extra security. Strangers are less likely to bump or jostle a person using a cane or walker.
  2. Treat the Pain– Some patients try to avoid the pain medication as they fear side effects and over-dependence on the medicines. However, you should also remember that too much pain will make it difficult for you to continue with the rehab exercises. It will be important for you to take your medication on time and as prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Do not give up on exercise-Adhering to a rehabilitation plan as recommended by your therapist is critical. You may be required to walk for 30 minutes two to three times daily. Your doctor may also suggest exercising for an additional 20 to 30 minutes every day.You may find that walking or exercising is painful. This is normal. Physical therapy is the most crucial part of rehab. Much of the success of the knee replacement surgery depends on the physical exercises. If you want your surgery to be 100% successful, you must keep your physical therapy appointments and do the prescribed exercises. A physical therapist can personalize a knee rehabilitation program as per the needs of the patient. For example, if a patient wants to go swimming after recovery, the physical therapist will teach exercises that can help the patient swim without any difficulty once he has recovered.
  1. Plan to avoid falls-In the first couple of weeks following the surgery, many people are prone to falls. You can reduce the chance of falls by planning ahead.  Avoid getting up and down the stairs or in and out of a car. Put essential items like the remote control, mobile, and towels near you.
  1. Treat the Swelling-Knee swelling can make it difficult for you to continue with range-of-motion exercises which are so important for recovery and rehabilitation.

Applying cold packs and elevating the affected leg for 20 to 30- minute intervals can help reduce the swelling. You can talk to your doctor and he may recommend Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These drugs can help with both pain and inflammation reduction.
