A Step By Step Guide To Obtaining Your GSTIN

Implementation of Goods and Services Tax on 1st July 2017 has been the biggest change since the introduction of indirect taxes in India. It is a unified tax levied on both goods and services. However, with the introduction of GST, TIN has been replaced with GST identification number (GSTIN). It is now issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). You can obtain GST identification number for your business in two ways –

  • Through the online portal of CBIC GST.

  • By approaching the digital Seva Kendra for GST registration.

Step 1 – Click the taxpayer’s Tab on GST Portal

On opening the GST portal, you’ll find a tab named ‘Taxpayers’. Click on it to get the dropdown menu and then click on ‘Register Now’ option.

Step 2 – Fill in All Details of Part A

Here’s how you need to do it –

  • Click on ‘New Registration’ option.

  • You will see the form below which starts with ‘I am a’. Choose a suitable option from the drop-down menu.

  • Next, select the concerned state or district your business is registered in.

  • Fill in your business’ name and its PAN.

  • Next, enter your phone number and email ID for verification purpose.

  • Click on the ‘proceed’ tab next.

Step 3 – Verify with OTP

Soon after, you will receive an OTP on the email and mobile number you provided. Enter the OTPs to verify your identification.

Step 4 – Receive and verify TRN

After this verification, you will receive a Temporary Reference Number that is required to generate your GST identification number later. Follow it with the first step to complete the two-way verification.

Click ‘Register Now’ with ‘TRN’. Enter the captcha & verify with OTP.

Step 5 – Part B: Edit application

Now, you can see a page with ‘draft’ application status. Click on the edit button beside and provide documents like –

  • Proof of your constitution as a taxpayer

  • Proof for the place your business operates in

  • Details of bank account

  • Authorisation form

  • Photographs of business partners or owners, etc.

Step 6 – Sign the declaration

The final step to complete the generation of GST identification number is signing the declaration. For this –

  • Use DSC for the application if it’s a company.

  • If you have used e-sign, check verification OTP on Aadhar-registered mobile number.

  • If you used EVC, check it on the registered number.

Use the Application Reference Number on your mobile to check application status any time after that.
