Amazon Spends $80 Million For Borat 2

Reportedly Amazon paid $80 million to buy the rights of Sacha Baron Cohen’s recent hit sequel, Borat: Subsequent Movie Film.

Borat: Subsequent Movie Film is a mockumentary comedy movie directed by Jason Woliner; it is also Woliner’s directorial debut. Sacha Baron Cohen is a fictional Kazakh reporter. The movie was released on 23 October 2020 on Amazon’s streaming platform, Prime Video, and it received lots of praise from audiences as well from critics.

Borat’s opening weekend was much more successful than that of Mulan. It attracted thousands of more viewers than Disney’s live-action film. The first movie in the franchise was released in 2006, and after 14 years, the franchise has released the second installment of the mockumentary. The movie has faced a lot of controversies because of its story. The plot follows Borat’s 15-year old daughter, Tutar (played by 24-year-old Maria Bakalova). She is involved in a controversial sequence that includes Rudy Giuliani, the current personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump, and the former mayor of New York City.

According to a new report, Deadline reveals Amazon Prime has paid around $80 million for the streaming right of Borat 2. It also shares that Cohen wanted to release the movie before the election. The film had tie-ups with Universal Pictures for its distribution, but the production house was not ready to release the film during the pandemic; hence Cohen opted for video on demand release for releasing the movie on his desired date. He also insisted on the online release to attract more audiences. However, it is unknown who else was in the race; Amazon’s winning bid was $80 million.

After seeing the audience’s response towards the movie, it seems Amazon has made a good decision buying the rights, and a large part of the amount has paid off.
