Benefits of Installing LED Light Bars on Jeeps

In the past, LED lights were most commonly found illuminating office buildings, parking lots, billboards, parks, construction sites and other outdoor spaces. LED lights were typically selected because they were more powerful, energy-efficient and had longer lives than traditional bulbs. Over the past few years, the popularity of LED light bars on vehicles—Jeeps, in particular—has been surging and demand will continue to expand into the future.
Vehicle owners are perpetually searching for the best ways to make their vehicles stand out from the pack. Specifically, 4×4 enthusiasts want accessories which look sharp but also provide functionality and style for off-road adventures. A specialized Jeep light bar fits the bill for everyone.

What exactly is an LED light and what makes it better?

To differentiate the benefits of an LED light, it is important to understand the history of light bulbs. Thomas Edison patented his incandescent light bulb in 1880. Essentially, a filament was housed inside a glass cavity and contained gas which, when it received power, would illuminate. The design of the traditional incandescent light bulb remained largely unchanged for over a century until the 1990s, when it became more cost-effective to produce LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs.

LEDs produce light when voltage is directly applied to the leads on the diode, resulting in illumination without the need for a gas-filled chamber. This is a severe oversimplification of the process and, in reality, it would take an entire article to explain exactly what happens. However, the benefits over traditional light sources are much easier to detail and include:

1. Long life: The incandescent bulb’s filament caught fire inside a contained-space. In anything outside optimal operating conditions—too hot, too cold, excessive vibrations and so on—a traditional bulb would fail and need to be replaced. Bulbs rarely worked after 1,000 hours. On the other hand, the New York Times reports that the expected lifespan of an LED bulb is routinely quoted as high as 50,000 hours.

2. Efficient: The most important benefit of an LED bulb is its efficiency. The traditional bulb only converts approximately 3% of the electricity it receives into light. Conversely, LED bulbs turn around 90% of voltage into visible light, meaning it produces far more—and clearer and brighter—light.

3. Rugged: Because there is no glass part encasing the filament in an LED bulb, it is substantially more durable—resistant to the elements and damage—than traditional bulbs. LEDs can withstand more impacts, vibrations, extreme weather and other environmental hazards and operate in the most perilous conditions.

For these and other reasons, more and more Jeeps and related off-road vehicles are now being customized with LED light bars.
