Bong Joon-ho to Produce an Immigration Drama “Sea Fog”

Academy Award Winner for Parasite, Bong Joon-ho is set to wear the producer’s hat for the Immigration drama venture “Sea Fog” under the banner of Participant Media.

Matt Palmer, famed director of “Calibre,” will pen the script for “Sea Fog” apart from directing it. Palmer’s script will be based on a draft written by Oren Moverman.

The film’s inspiration 2014 South Korean film of the same was directed by Shim Sung Bo. Bong Joon-ho had written a script for the film alongside Shim. Inspired by a true story, it followed a fishing-boat crew on a menacing task to smuggle a group of undocumented migrants from China to Korea. The earliest inspiration for Shim and Bong had been a 2007 stage play exploring this true event.

Bong Joon-ho has etched his name in the history after being the first foreign director ever to win an Academy Award for his world-renowned film Parasite. He made a statement about “Sea Fog” in which he praised the creative capabilities of Matt Palmer, especially with respect to the film “Calibre,” in which he brought forward people’s “true natures” by putting in extreme situations. In that same statement, he revealed his excitement for the project in which he will get to work with Palmer’s team.

Other producers who will collaborate on this project are Dooho Choi and Lewis Taewan Kim. From the side of Participant Media, Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren will executive produce the film.

Matt Palmer also enthused about this project, he enthused in a statement that while making “Sea Fog,” he will get to work with one of the modern cinema’s unique visionary talents Bong Joon-ho. He also spoke nice words about Participant Media and said that their track record of delivering content that is both “nerve-shredding” as well as deeply inspiring is a thing to look up to.

Calibre is now available on Netflix, having been released in 2018. The film received rave critical reviews and won the Michael Powell Award at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Palmer’s representatives are WME, and he works closely with 42 in managing his work. WME also represents Bong Joon-ho and Dooho Choi alongside Jonathan Gardner. Jerome Duboz manages all of Bong’s work.

Parasite won an academy award alongside the nominations Joker, 1917, Irishman, Ford vs Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
