Broadcasting Giant RTL Expands Into the VOD Market As Its First Quarter Profits Go Down

The leading commercial broadcasting company of Europe released three new VOD platforms for European nations in 2018 in an attempt to fight off Netflix. RTL group is expanding into the online video services market in an effort to make up for a failing free TV business and to stay competitive with rival companies like Amazon Prime and Netflix.

In the first quarter of this year, RTL group launched three fresh VOD platforms in Croatia, Belgium, and Hungary. They are all based on French 6play platform of the RTL group. RTL group operated an impressive number of 61 television channels across 30 European nations. The group controlled by the Bertelsmann aspires to quickly expand its rapidly growing digital video business by collaborating between its local networks.

RTL announced that it is planning to invest a substantial amount in VOD. It will switch its focus to local and exclusive content while offering a blended model of an open VOD alongside a first-class, Netflix-type pay product.

RTL Group hopes that it can effortlessly and seamlessly unite its traditional broadcasting business with VOD to compensate for the decrease in free-to-air viewing which has occurred with the increase of streaming services over Europe.

Germany, which is the largest market of RTL, is one of the prime test cases. A couple of months back, RTL released a new and free-to-air digital channel called Now Us which was stuffed with favorite American shows such as Glee, Breaking Bad, Suits, and Modern Family.

With its net profits plummeting sharply, it is expected that 2018 will be a tough year for RTL. The upcoming soccer World Cup will lead to a decline in the audience numbers as sports fans switch over to the public broadcasters which carrying FIFA matches.
