Where is scuba diving performed?
Snorkeling in Puerto Galera is awesome. One cool thing about the whole area is lots of large limestone caves near the shore, which means there’s always something interesting inside. And even if they aren’t quite open to the public, nearly everyone here knows exactly how to get into them. They’re usually entered under the stairs or through holes in inwalls. Once you enter, you’re in a huge network of tunnels that wind for miles close to the shore. These are full of stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations that would be pretty impressive in any case, but especially here because of the visibility. Some of these places are hundreds of feet deep. But nothing compares to the main attraction—the Whale Shark Lagoon right next to town.
The Whale Shark Lagoon is one of the best places to swim with whale sharks. You don’t see the massive size you might expect when you swim amongst their population. Their average length is around 10 meters (33 ft) and they weigh between 3 and 8 thousand kilograms (6 and 15 tons)! The reason for the discrepancy is that females are bigger than males. It turns out that female whale sharks give birth to live young instead of eggs, and after mating, the male fertilizes the eggs internally. That’s right. He delivers the sperm, eggs, and placenta all at the same time.
