PCB stands for Printed Circuit Board and is used for connecting different electrical components mechanically. These circuit boards are beneficial, and a proper assembly can the production volume of any unit. An overview of a PCB

The need for a PCB can be identified with the manufacturing process of any electronic device. At first, semiconductors are transformed into microprocessors and chips, and then they are integrated into an electronic circuit board that is printed. The process of PCB assembly is extremely necessary as a chip cannot function all by itself and needs an electronic board. These chips and microprocessors when fitted correctly with each other, give birth to an electronic component.

There are two types of techniques used for assembling various electronic components on a PCB. These techniques are described below:

Surface-Mount Technique (SMT)

The surface-mount technology is a method where electrical components are directly placed on the surface of a PCB. The device that is made using this technique is called Surface-Mount Device or SMD and is widely available in the market presently. This is a simple process for PCB fabrication and has got many benefits. It has been noted that the speed of manufacturing products increases a lot using this technique.

The size of an SMT component is smaller, and they have small-sized leads. There are also many components where the lead is completely missing. This technique allows fitting of components on either side of a printed board and that too with a higher density. The products perform better under electrical shocks and vibrations.

Through-hole Technique

This is a traditional technique used for mounting electrical components onto a PCB. Here, leads are used on those components that are to be inserted into holes drilled in a PCB. These holes are soldered carefully from the other side to ensure their secured placement throughout.

This PCB fabrication technique is safer, and the electrical components are bonded strongly with each other. However, the PCB becomes more expensive as there are added drillings needed.

Processes involved in the complete assembling of a PCB

  • Printing of the solder paste- in this process, the first printing of solder paste is done on a PCB with the help of a stencil
  • Placing of the components- here chips and microprocessors are placed on their accurate place on a PCB
  • Soldering of chips- after the chips are placed, their solders are melted for proper binding
  • Coating- a protective layer of coating is applied on the board
  • Inspecting the connections- here, AOI and AXI are conducted to ensure there is no error in fabrication
