The UN thread taps stand for The Unified Thread Taps and it is designed according to the American National Standard Institute having a 60 degrees angle. This particular type of thread taps is commonly used in the United States and Canada. The Unified thread taps are further classified into the Unified hand taps which are mainly used in single volume production and the Unified machine taps which are widely used in mass production. The UN thread tap is known to possess the following characteristic;

° Low-cost tools.
° High thread accuracy.
° Less dependent on operation workers.

In order to carry out effective cutting on any piece of material, there is a need for the appropriate tap to be selected. This UN thread tap has some basic features that should be put in mind before the selection of any tap for a particular operation.

° Thread Type: The metric thread tap comes in different thread type that is standardized according to the ISO standard. This feature covers aspect like the flank angle, the pitch, thread diameter, the shank, and the tolerance zone. The variation in this feature determines the applications of these tapping tools in the country where it is being used.

° Head Shape: To determine the head shape of the UN thread tap to be selected for any application depend on the type of hole to be threaded. Basically, the head shape of these tools is usually pointed or flat. Taps with the flathead are usually used to drill their way into a blind hole while the pointed head shape is possible for drilling through holes.

° Pointcut: This is located at the head of the UN thread taps and it takes place over multiple threads which have a high influence on the tapping operation. This implies that the more thread a UN thread tap has the fewer forces that act during the taping operations.

° The Shank: The overflow shank and the reinforced shank are the two shank variants of the UN thread taps. The reinforced shank increases towards the end and it is used for tough workpieces and materials that are difficult to work on while the overflow shank has the same diameter throughout hence it is suitable for long through holes or blind holes.

° The Flute: This is one important feature of the UN thread taps that should be considered because it is used as a channel system for the collection and removal of the material chips. Two types of flute do exist in the thread taps and they are the straight and spiral flutes. The straight flute is used for through-hole as the material chips crumble and fall through the hole. The UN hand thread taps are generally straight fluted. The taps with the spiral flutes are best used for blind holes because the chips are removed from the holes against the cutting direction.
