Greyhound: A Film Based on a Navy Commander During World War II

Greyhound is a war/drama film, directed by Aaron Schneider who has featured Tom Hanks in the lead role as Ernest Krause. The film is however based on a 1955 novel ‘The Good Shepherd’ which was written by C.S. Foster. The Good Shepherd is a novel based on war story and nautical fiction which denotes the difficulties that arose during the Atlantic War. In the novel, Foster has very well portrayed the struggles of a man against his enemies, the sea, and the exhaustion of constant surveillance upon the possible dangers in the sea. Similar scenes have been adapted in the movie Greyhound where Tom Hanks has played the role of the World War II naval commander, Ernest Krause. The latter served in the navy for the United States during the Spanish American War. Ernest was an American coxswain. He received several rewards including the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

Tom Hanks, as already discussed, plays the role of Ernest Krause in the movie Greyhound who has been assigned to lead the men and ships across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean to join the war. The plot of the movie follows the US Navy commander who has been assigned for the first time in command of a multinational escort group who has to defend a merchant ship convey from attacks by the submarines. The film was scheduled to get released on July 10, 2020, but it has been delayed due to the pandemic. However, the trailer can be seen on the Sony Picture Entertainment channel on YouTube. The trailer was released on March 5, 2020. Since its release, it has received numerous positive reviews from the critics. The right for the distribution of the movie has been given to Apple TV+ which is all set to release the film digitally on July 10, 2020. The film focuses on Ernest Krause, who leads the convoy of 37 allied ships but gets eagerly pursued by the enemies in German U-boats. Krause then receives the command of a destroyer, and now he has to make decisions on his own to tackle the enemies and defend his convoy to prove himself an effective leader.

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, the biggest challenge of its military was to safely reach the place where the war was going on. The troops and the arms had to be moved through the water surface even when the air protection was not much reliable. This made the convoy of Ernest Krause vulnerable to sudden attacks and so did happen too. The German U-boats started persuading Ernest’s caravan like scavengers. Krause has to tackle up with the situation and protect his convoy from the attack by German U-boats.

You will see Krause as a man of faith whose leadership quality has been depicted in the movie. He manages to maintain stability and calmness, and at the same time, he deals with the U-boats which bear down on his convoy. Much of the movie scenes are shot on an actual ship and tons of computer-generated graphics have been used in the scenes so that it can look realistic. The movie is ultimately one of the best perfunctory pictures of Tom Hanks.

It is all set to be released on July 10, 2020. It can be watched on Apple TV+. The complete runtime of the film is around 1 hour 31 minutes, and it has been rated for Parental Guidance and is age restricted for children who are below thirteen years of age.
