How to Customize Desktop Icons in Windows

A customized desktop icon helps you save time while providing a personal touch at the same time. You can build the same by modifying the icon or with the help of getting another icon i.e., download it or create it yourself. Luckily, you can include custom shortcuts.

Customize System Desktop Icons

  1. Firstly, go to Start.
  2. Press the Windows symbol, in the end, left-hand side corner of the display; otherwise, tap on the Windows button on your keyboard.
  3. Then, press on Settings. It will be present in the end.
  4. After that, press on Personalization.
  5. Next, tap on Themes.
  6. Then, tap on Desktop icon settings.
  7. Note that you can choose Get more themes in the Store. It will be below the ‘Apply a theme’ title. This option helps you to get desktop themes according to your likes. Few of the themes shall modify the desktop icons’ look of your device.
  8. Next, press an icon that you wish to change.
  9. For instance, choose This PC.
  10. You can even put a tick on the square after the desktop, or clear the tick mark from that square to remove it from the desktop.
  11. Put a tick mark on the square immediately after the option stating ‘Allow themes to change desktop icons’ to let theme associated icon customization.
  12. Next, tap on Change Icon.
  13. Then, choose an icon. You can choose two different kinds of icons:
  14. System icon: Press on the provided icon.
  15. Custom icon: Press ‘Browse’ and tap on the folder in which the custom icons are placed (left-hand part of the window). Choose the icon that you wish to use, then press on Open.
  16. After that, press on OK. This will set the chosen icon on the desktop.
  17. Next, tap on Apply.
  18. Lastly, tap on ‘OK’. This confirms customizing the desktop program’s icon.

Customize Shortcut and Folder Icons

  1. Firstly, go to Start. Press the Windows symbol located in the end at the left-hand side corner of the display; otherwise, tap on the Windows button on your keyboard.
  2. Then, press the File Explorer.
  3. After that, press on Desktop.
  4. Next, tap on a shortcut or folder icon.

Note: You shall not be able to modify the icons of some particular items. For instance, Notepad files and .exe file in the given way.

  • Then, press Home. It will be present in the upper section.
  • After that, press Properties.
  • Next, go to the icon’s ‘’Change Icon’’ window.
  • Then, choose an icon. You can choose from two icons:
  • System icon: Press an icon in the window.
  • Custom icon: Press ‘Browse’ and tap on the place where the custom icons are present. Choose the icon and press Open.
  • Next, tap on ‘OK.’
  • After that, press Apply.
  • Lastly, tap on ‘OK.’
