How to file a claim under the PMSBY policy?

In 2015, the Indian Prime Minister of India launched different social security schemes keeping in mind the members of the economically weaker sections of the society. Plans for affordable housing, pension schemes, and insurance plans were launched to help these members get the benefits that are mainly available to sections of the society who can afford them. One stand-out scheme introduced by the Indian Government is the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.

It is an accidental insurance scheme available at INR 12 annually, with coverage ranging between INR 1 lakh to 2 lakh. The policy offers coverage under different scenarios encompassing accidents, loss of limbs and eyesight, accidental death, and death owing to murder. Following is the process to file an insurance claim under this scheme –

Steps to file an insurance claim:

If you want to encash your PMSBY policy, there are some procedures to follow. One can file a claim right after the accident takes place. Under the accidental death of the policyholder, the individual registered as the nominee of the deceased can file the claim. Let us look at the steps –

File FIR and gather relevant documents

Visit the closest police station and file an FIR of the accident. If the policyholder expires, their nominee can file the FIR. The nominee should also collect the original FIR, post-mortem reports, and the death certificate, and submit them at the time of filing the claims. The applicant should file the FIR even if it is a minor accident. Make sure you provide all the details to the officer. If need be, produce the disability certificate issued and signed by the civil surgeon along with a discharge certificate.

Inform the bank

Since the PMSBY scheme gets linked with your savings account, the next step is to inform the bank branch where the savings account is held. If an accident, the insured party can contact the bank, while in case of the demise of the policyholder, the nominee should approach the bank for completing the claim process.

Fill the claim form

The bank offers the PMSBY holder the claim form. Ensure you read the form thoroughly and fill it accordingly to avoid any delays in receiving the claim amount. The claim form is a simple document where you need to enter details such as personal information of the insured party, details of the nominee, details of the accident, and the documents submitted along with other aspects.

Verification and disbursal of the claim amount

Once you have filled and reviewed the form, submit to the bank. Make sure the claim form gets submitted within 30 days from the date of the accident. Once you file the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana claim, bank officers verify the details of the accident. The insurance company then approves the claim, and the amount gets credited to the linked bank account.
