How to Find a Good Hatha Yoga Class?

You have heard of hatha yoga and you want to understand what it is. Have you already started looking for a Best Yoga Teacher Training Dharamshala or in another city in India? After reading this article, you will know what hatha yoga is and what to check to ensure that the course you have chosen is up to par.

Different styles

Understanding the differences between the multiple styles of modern yoga can be a daunting approach. There are countless prefixes and each style cultivates its own mythology to enhance itself. How does hatha yoga stand out?

Words mean nothing

First, you should know that yoga is an unregulated field and that everyone is free to give their teaching the title they want. What is now called “hatha yoga” is nothing like the ancient hatha yoga described in the founding texts of yoga? These are modern practices, more or less inspired by ancient hatha yoga.

Modern yoga is above all a practice of postures. To simplify, there are two ways to practice them: a slow way where the postures are held in a static way and away from where the postures are carried out according to a dynamic sequence, the movements synchronized with the breathing.

The slow manner dominates in the so-called Hatha yoga classes. Thus, in these courses, more importance and attention is given to the sensations and feelings experienced in the postures than to their appearance.

Breathing Breathing

exercises, or pranayamas in Sanskrit, used to have a predominant place in yoga (more important than postures). These are strong exercises that influence the nervous system and which affect us psychically in depth.

In a hatha yoga class, pranayamas are sometimes integrated, but often only in a simplified manner. The teachers who master and teach classic pranayamas are few. Check to what extent these exercises are integrated into the practice of the course that interests you. If pranayamas are an integral part of each session, this is a good sign.

The yoga styles that enhance pranayamas place them at the end of the session. Other styles use them as a warm-up before the postures. Prioritize the styles that practice pranayamas after asanas.

Relaxation, concentration, and meditation

A good hatha yoga class ends with a calm part to harmonize the effects of postures and pranayamas. This can be a small meditation, a relaxation technique or at least five minutes of immobility with your eyes closed. The more intense the practice, the more important this last meditative part. Teachers who do not take the time to integrate this moment of calm at the end of a session are to be avoided.

Meditation and concentration are essential aspects in old-fashioned hatha yoga. The more your teacher is experienced in these aspects, the more he will be able to make you discover them.

Duration of the session

The sessions displayed as hatha yoga typically last an hour and a half. This is to be considered as a minimum. Do not waste your time with shorter sessions, you will be disappointed by their weak effects.

An hour and a half is just enough to integrate both postures, a minimum of pranayamas, and a little relaxation. If you want to get deeper effects, you have to increase the duration of the session.

Try before you commit

Given the multiple attitudes, pedagogies, and visions of what hatha yoga is and which differ considerably between teachers and centers, it is recommended to do a trial class or an introductory course before to commit over time.
