How to Fix the Layout on Mac’s Mail App

The layout on the mailing app of your Mac depends on the version you use, i.e., macOS Catalina 10.15 or macOS Mojave 10.14. Using a macOS Mojave 10.14, you’ll find the classic layout that displays your mails will appear next to the mail list by default. And in macOS Cataline 10.15, messages will show next to the message list. If by any means you change the layout of your mail, you can quickly get it back to normal or default, but you must be aware of the version you are using.

Changes in the Mail app

The macOS Catalina users might know that a few preferences were changed on the system’s Mail app. The macOS Mojave had a classic layout, where the messages are seen at the top, and the message preview appeared below, and all of it was available in a check-box option. But Apple removed that option from Catalina. Somehow, users can imitate the classic Mail app layout in Catalina as well. You have to choose a few options in the View menu. But the Mail app, by default, shows a three-column view only and it includes the mailboxes on the left, a message list for the selected mailbox at the center, and on the right, there is a preview section of the selected mail messages.

Catalina users can choose to hide or show the right column on the mailing app with the help of Show Side Preview under the View menu. Users can also readjust the width of the three columns by dragging the vertical dividers, separating the three columns, to either side of the columns. You can also hide the preview list; all you need to do is drag the dividers between the message list and preview all the way to the right. The step will complete when the divider gets attached to the right side of the window with a snap-like movement. Remember that you cannot drag the divider back to the left even if you give your best shot to pull the divider to the previous position. And, that’s because you can’t get access to the divider again once it’s moved to the right.

Now, if you’re wondering how to get it back, then do not worry. We have a solution to your problem. It’s a very easy process that requires you to dig into the Library folder under your Home directory, and then follow these steps:

  1. If you are using the Mail app, choose Quit Mail from the Mail menu.
  2. Click on a blank spot on your screen to switch to Finder.
  3. Hit the Go button in the menu bar.
  4. Go to the Library.
  5. Open the Containers folder to find a bunch of sub-folders.
  6. Drag the com.apple.mail folder to the desktop.

Now relaunch the Mail app. Delete the com.apple.mail folder from your desktop if the three-column view reappears and the Mail app starts to function properly. Based on how you chose to display the mail app, you might have to reset some of the settings on display. It will automatically reset to the default view.
