How to troubleshoot “Can’t Verify Domain” error in Office 365?

“We can’t verify the domain because it is associated with another Microsoft hosted service. A domain can be associated with only one service. To use this domain, first remove it from the other service, and then try again to verify the domain.”

Cause of this error

This error may occur due to any of the following reasons:

  • The domain you are trying to verify already exists in another Microsoft cloud services. For instance, this domain is already available in Live@edu
  • The domain you are trying to verify is federated with Microsoft Exchange Online

Troubleshooting Steps

Choose one of the following troubleshooting methods:

  • While verifying a domain in Office 365, just remember that only one domain can exist in the cloud services at one time. If you want to use some other domain then remove the existing one from Live@edu
  • If this new domain exists from an Exchange federation trust that was previously enabled, remove the federation trust either by using the EMC or the Shell
