Maldives: Things You Should Know Before Traveling

Maldives is one of the most romantic and fantastic beach destinations in the world. This exotic travel destination is particularly known for its picturesque palm-fringed islands, amazing coral reefs and pristine beaches. If you are heading for this beautiful land, then take a look of the things you should know about Maldives.

  1. There are more than 2,000 islands

Yes, you heard it right. Maldives is a collection of about 1,190 individual islands apart from many other submerged islands and atolls. This island country is located at Indian Ocean, just below Sri Lanka and India on map. Although Maldives tourism has earned its name and fame around the world but still you have to zoom in on your Google map to spot these islands.

  1. Neither all the islands are inhabited nor natural

Among the 2,000 islands and 26 different atolls in Maldives, only 200 are inhabited by people. Few of these habitats are permanent residence for people and others are used seasonally for the purpose of farming and fishing. During your trip to this island country, you will see most resorts are located on privately owned islands and they are far away from the cities and villages. You will be surprised to know that in spite of having thousands of islands, few islands are either artificial or reclaimed. For example, Huhulmale, the closest to the airport is an artificial island.

  1. Maldives is an Islamic country

Maldives is the only country in the world which has a 100% Muslim population other than Saudi Arabia. This is a good piece of information to know as during the holy month of Ramadan, most of the local people including the staffs in hotels, resorts and airport will not be able to eat or drink anything between sunrise and sunset. It is better to schedule your Maldives tour package any other time than Ramadan in order to avoid inconvenience.

  1. Alcohols, bikini and PDA are not allowed in public places including the public beaches

Being an Islamic country, Maldivian population follow some conservative and extremely strict rules. In spite of being the ‘Beach Paradise’ on Earth, Maldives don’t allow you to drink alcohol or flaunt bikini in public beaches. Don’t show too much of your affection in public places as this may cause trouble from local authorities. But there is nothing to get scared of as all these are allowed on private resort islands.

  1. Each resort is actually an island

The most fascinating part of any Maldives package tour is its private resorts. This is surprising for many that every resort in Maldives comes with its own private island. This means most of the beach resorts are tiny in size and can be walked around easily. Even you can cover some of the islands within an hour. Before booking your resort, make sure you gather as much information as you can about the facilities you are looking for.

  1. They recycle the drinking water

Most water that you are going to drink in Maldives is actually recycled, treated and produced via reverse osmosis desalination process. Although this process is absolutely fine but it takes all the natural minerals out of the water, making it low on nutritional value scale.
