Man’s Best Friend becomes Man’s First Family!

Seventy percent of U.S. households- about 90.5 million families, own a pet, according to the 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). Since its beginning around sixteen thousand years ago, owning a dog has become more like having a family than having a pet. In a Study conducted by Rover.com, and covered by Philadelphia CBS, it was found that 54% of pet parents were willing to end a relationship if their dogs didn’t like their partner. Moreover, before committing to marriage, one of the basic points in “the talk” is regarding their pets!

The study, “The Truth About Dog People,”, examined the responses of thousands of dog owners from the year 2015 to year 2017.

“Young Americans are less likely to be homeowners or parents than previous generations, but one category they lead in, is pet ownership”; said Brandie Gonzales, pet lifestyle expert for Rover. “Dog people are deeply concerned about their dog’s feelings and well-being. And we’re seeing that reflected in everything from how people name their dog to what they feed them, and the type of pet care they prefer.”

Rover.com also says that 56% of dog parents first say hello to their dogs on coming home, before noticing the rest of the family!

In light of these facts, it makes sense for a dog parent to want the best for their pets! Dogs are a different species from humans and have their own unique personalities and traits. Thus, in order to be able to communicate better, dog parents and dogs need to have a common language between them, which they are both fluent in. To achieve this, it is important to first acknowledge the fact that negative reinforcement is not the right path to be on. While projecting a lack of affection, it creates a negative impact on the physical and psychological health of the dog. Thus, dog training needs to be filled with joy, happiness and positive reinforcement.
