Regina King Wins Yet Another Emmy for Watchmen
Not surprisingly, Regina King was chosen as an undisputed winner of Lead Actress in Limited Series in recognition of his sublime performance in coming of age HBO superhero drama series Watchmen. She could very well be a serious contender at Oscars with her first directorial venture “One Night in Miami.”
Regina King should be considered nothing less than a legend as far as Primetime Emmy Awards are concerned as she has stormed her way to her fourth win at the prestigious award show for her role of Angela Abar aka Sister Night in the mega-hit HBO show Watchmen.
Although many had predicted King to be an obvious winner, there were few who were fancying other contenders that included Shira Haas for her role in Netflix show “Unorthodox”, Octavia Spencer from yet another Netflix product “Self Made,” Cate Blanchett for her role in Hulu’s show “Mrs America,” and Kerry Washington for “Little Fires Everywhere” (Hulu).
Watchmen remained a celebrated show at Primetime Emmy Awards bagging a total 11 nominations (Regina King’s being one of them) after it had swept the TCA Awards last week.
It was King’s second award win in the Leading Actress in Limited Series or Movie category and fourth win in general at Emmys. She had won previously in 2018 for her Netflix show “Seven Seconds.”
Her other two wins came in Best Supporting Actress in the drama category for the ABC show “American Crime” which saw her winning successively in 2015 and 16. She was also nominated in 2017 for the same but ultimately lost to Laura Dern who astounded everyone in HBO show “Big Little Lies.”
She had given an interview to IndieWire earlier in which she had enthused about her latest role in the award-winning HBO show “Watchmen.” In the interview, she said that what attracted her to “Watchmen” was not the pull of comic books, or the 2009 film or even the script. It was Damon Lindelof’s name attached to the project that made her say yes to the show even before she read the script. In the interview she said that when she received the script from Lindelof, she immediately said yes to him as she didn’t have a single shred of doubt on Lindelof’s virtuosity; she recalled her time with him on the sets of “Leftovers” and called it “exceptional.” She remarked that there was some “cosmic answer” in play and said that there are some roles that you don’t have to find as they are the ones that find you.
One of the interesting things from the interview was the fact that she mentioned about being alien to the world of “Watchmen” when she had agreed to do that role. She had never read the comics, hadn’t watched the 2009 Hollywood film of the same name, or didn’t even read the script. The trust she had on Lindelof is what made her a part of one of the most outstanding shows of 2019.
King would also have one eye in 2021 where she would be expecting something at the Academy Awards for her directorial venture in “One Night in Miami.” She had made the film based on a script penned by Kemp Powers who jot down the story based on his own theater play.
The ensemble cast of the film included Kingsley Ben-Adir, Leslie Odom Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Eli Goree. The story followed a linear timeline of one night and explored the events when four black icons meet up at a hotel room in Florida, Miami.
The film received humongous applause from critics who hailed King’s performance behind the camera. Many of the critics, including the one from Variety, IndieWire, and Collider saw King’s film as at least a possible nominee at the 2021 Academy Awards if not being the winner itself.
She can keep her fingers crossed as many Oscar fans think that she has every chance to be the one to follow Katheryn Bigelow as the second female to win an Oscar for the work behind the camera. In 90 years of history, only five female directors have been nominated, and only one has ever won it (Katheryn Bigelow for her work in the Iraqi war film The Hurt Locker).
