Essentially, a Diesel generator is a machine that burns fuel in a combustion engine, resulting in the production of mechanical energy, which is then converted to electrical energy. It is a machine that works on the principle of electromagnetic induction, in which the armature is rotated between the poles of a horseshoe type magnet.

A diesel engine works on the laws of conversion of energy where one form of energy is transformed into the other by a series of processes that are involved in the conversion. The fuel is combusted in the engine, and the chemical energy of the fuel (in this case diesel) is at first converted into mechanical energy that is used to spin the armature, and this motion in the alternator is what gets converted into the electrical energy which is then channelled out with the help of a voltage regulator and then distributed according to requirement.
