In late December 2019, people in Wuhan, China began to get sick with a previously unknown pneumonia, marking the beginning of a new infectious disease, later identified as a new type of coronavirus.
The International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses selected the name severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to represent that the new virus is a sister of the original SARS virus. The disease the virus causes was named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by WHO.
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and its partners at Candid are tracking philanthropic donations to this outbreak. As of July 28, 2021, total donations received stood at $25.3 billion.

Worldwide
The worldwide case total is 197,703,056, with 4.2 million deaths and 178.8 million recoveries. Over the past seven days, daily worldwide new cases have increased by 9% for a weekly total of 4 million new cases. Of those, nearly one million cases came from just three countries: the U.S., Indonesia and India. There were almost 62,000 deaths in the past seven days for a 10% increase in deaths, compared to the week prior. There was also a 7% increase in recoveries.
There are cases in 220 countries and territories. Thirty-one countries have more than 1 million cases, with 19 of those having more than 2 million cases each. India and the U.S. are the only two countries with more than 30 million cases, with Brazil close to reaching 20 million.
The countries with the highest cases after the U.S. (which has 35.6 million cases) are India, Brazil, Russia, France and the U.K. India now has 31.6 million cases and Brazil is at 19.8 million. Russia has 6.2 million cases, France has 6 million cases and the U.K has 5.8 million cases.
The list of countries with the highest number of new cases in the past seven days is similar to the list of highest total cases with the S. in the lead, followed by Indonesia, India and Brazil.
The countries with the highest level of deaths over the previous seven days are Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.
Brazil and India remain of particular concern to CDP, and we continue to track and monitor trends, as well as activities of responding NGOs and are happy to provide funders with recommendations. However, we are no longer providing separate updates on these two countries. Both will be updated within the global section.
New research from India, is showing that the excess death rate and the likely infection/caseload rate are both significantly higher than the official numbers. CDP had previously reported that this was likely the case.
