The Science Behind Deep-Water Oil Drilling

The pursuit of oil has been steadily moving away from dry land and into the realm of the sea using what is known as deep-water oil drilling. According to The Verge, experts agree that drilling at new depths offers opportunities to unlock untapped oil reserves,  a process which has become easier with the advance in technology. They also warn of the increased danger and smaller margin for error.The potential damage done to the environment can be seen from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig oil explosion in 2010 which led to 11 casualties and over 200 million gallons of oil spewed into the Mexican gulf.In light of such a tragic event, Winson Oil has made it a moral obligation to understand how deep-water oil drilling works so as to continue with ethical operations.


The Size Of A Drilling Rig

According to an interview with Henry Fountain, a science reporter for the New York Times, he explains that drilling rigs such as the Deepwater horizon are large pieces of equipment. The rigs can go up to 300 by 300 feet with drilling derricks of around 220 to 230 feet high. In order to pierce the deep waters and reach the oil, the rig carries thousands of feet of drill pipe and other types of piping to reach its goal. In order to keep the drilling rig stable, thrusters are installed, allowing the rig to stay in place for days at a time.


Use Of Synthetic Mud

When it comes to deep-water drilling, the water and bedrock place pressure on the oil that lays below. To counteract the oil’s ceaseless surge to the surface upon release, synthetic mud is pumped into the shaft to create a heavy column of downward force that simulates the same pressure made by the water and bedrock.

Acting as a last line of defence, the blowout preventer is a specialized valve used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells to prevent blowouts, the uncontrolled release of crude oil or natural gas from a well.In the event of a blowout, capping stacks are kept nearby onshore.
