Things to consider before installing Recessed lighting

Recessed lights are justly known for providing unobtrusive, eye catching uniform bright light for indoor spaces. New homeowners or people who opt for remodelling have started considering recessed fixtures as their go to light fixtures for a variety of reasons.  Many newer models allow different variations with respect to bulb, housing and trims; they are made up of eye-catching materials that range from glass to crystal available in translucent as well as colored variations.

Even if you choose to stick with regular recessed lighting, you still have plenty of options. Can lights or pot lights can provide general illumination or accent lighting for a favorite piece of art, task lighting over your working zone and improve the general room lighting.

Planning ahead is the key to getting the lights in the right spot. Decide what you want to accomplish with the recessed lights. For example, you might want to accent any wall-mounted feature.

If you are planning to remodel consider the functional and aesthetic possibilities that recessed lighting offers.

Overall lighting plan for installing recessed lighting should be well thought out. The few things to be considered are:

  • Ceiling: First measure the ceiling hole to determine the size of housing and trim you need. working with an existing light fixture requires a remodel housing; however, make sure you get the one which is insulation rated. If there’s another floor above, You may need a shallow ceiling housing, and the wire may have to be fished through the ceiling frame.
  • Wiring: the existing wiring can either be aluminum or copper based. Make sure to use the same material which also has the same thickness of that of your existing wiring. If the existing wiring is fabric-insulated or has no ground wire, it should be replaced.
  • Electricity/lights: You can add lights that draw as many watts as the existing fixture without overloading the circuit. You can safely install up to 400 watts of lighting on the circuit. If you plan to use more watts than the existing fixture, have an electrician determine what the circuit can carry.

For your safety, please ensure that the electricity at the main fuse box (or the circuit breaker box) that supplies power to the fixture is turned off.

Test the wires with a non-voltage carrying screwdriver to ensure the power is OFF.

Do not use bulbs with wattage greater than specified for this fixture.

Once set, you should know the type of recessed lights which goes best with your ceiling type and electrical wattage. The three main things to look out for are:

  • Housing: housing is fused neatly between framing joists, which enables these fixtures to take up virtually zero visible space, and its self-effacing style means that it can coordinate with almost any decor, modern or traditional.hence they are also used in period homes while remodelling.
  • Trim: The type of trims used helps cast the desired light effect.Baffle trim provide a full, wide beam of light.Eyeball trim allow the light to rotate so you can focus it on a specific area to direct a bright, focused beam toward any object whether it’s a work of art or an architectural feature like fireplace or bookshelf.
  • Bulb: bulbs get to make the final statement as they control the vibe of the space. Color rendition level, life span and energy efficiency differs from product to product; the widely used bulbs are halogen or LED lamps.
