Things to Consider While Buying Shrimp

Shrimp is one of the famous and most loved seafood around the world. From being served as a shrimp cocktail in a fine dining restaurant to shrimp popcorn in a bar, it comes in different forms and is loved by people in all forms. It has become one such seafood that people love to consume on a regular basis. However, it is not easy to buy the right kind of shrimp. There are so many things one needs to know before they purchase shrimp and these things are covered in this article.

Difference between Frozen and Fresh Shrimp

The first thing fishermen do when they bring shrimp out of the sea is throwing them in a bucket of ice. Shrimp needs to be frozen all the time in order to maintain its freshness. Fresh shrimp may seem like an attractive word than frozen shrimp but technically the fresh shrimp were also kept in the ice bucket and are thawed. The thing with seafood especially shrimp is that they need to be kept refrigerated to stay fresh and the “frozen shrimp” is fresher when compared to the thawed shrimp.

Always ask for frozen ones from the wholesale shrimp suppliers in India. Another good thing about frozen shrimp is that they cook and taste better too when compared to the ones that are outside the freezer. At the end of the day, taste and hygiene are the only things that matter right!

Size is important

Shrimps are available in different sizes, colors, and shapes too. People use different types of shrimps according to their requirements. So, always ensure that you are getting the right kind of shrimp. There will be a headcount available on the packet and this headcount indicates the amount of shrimp you are going to get for 1 kilogram. Let’s take an example that the headcount is 21/25, which means that there will be 21 to 25 shrimps in one kilogram. As headcount increases, the size of shrimp decreases and vice versa. So, always check the headcount and ensure that it is going to meet your requirement.

Know the Preservatives

Now, this is another important thing that you need to know about. The preservatives present in shrimps can cause some health issues and may also affect the taste too. Here are the three preservatives that you have to look out for-

  • Everfresh is a preservative that keeps shrimp away from the black spots. It consists of 4-hexylresorcinol. FDA considers it safe but according to a recent study, overdosage of 4-hexylresorcinol can boost estrogen levels which can cause breast cancer in women. Usually, there is no need to mention this on the label.
  • Sodium Bisulfate is approved by FDA but some people can be sensitive to it. You won’t find this on the label.
  • Sodium Tripolyphosphate is used to make shrimp look bulky. When you cook it, the shrimp shrinks down to its usual size. You can check the label to understand how heavily your shrimp has been treated. Usually, the sodium levels of shrimp are 250mg per hundred grams. Now compare the same with sodium levels of shrimp on the label.

Shrimp with or without Shells

Now, this is your personal choice. Shrimp cooked with shell and head taste so good but not everyone will have time to peel the shell while eating right. So, it is always a personal choice to go with shrimp with or without shells.
