Today’s Birthday June 7: US singer-songwriter Prince (1958-).

Eccentric American singer and songwriter Prince rose to fame in the 1980s delivering diverse music, flamboyant attire and animated performances.

Born Prince Nelson on June 7, 1958, electrum bsv in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he played in a high school band before recording his debut album For You in 1978.

In 1980 Prince made his popular breakthrough with the funk album Dirty Mind.

In 1983 he released the album 1999, followed by the soundtrack to the film Purple Rain (1984), in which he also starred.

He won three Grammys for the album.

During this period, Prince created controversy for wearing women’s lingerie and high heels while performing and for his sexually explicit lyrics.

More albums followed, including the commercially unsuccessful Lovesexy (1988), the hit album Diamonds and Pearls (1991), The Black Album (1994) and Emancipation (1996).

After the release of Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic in 1999, he released two jazz-influenced albums The Rainbow Children (2001) and the all-instrumental NEWS in 2003.

Hailed as his comeback album, Musicology was released in April 2004.

He won two Grammys in February 2005.

In the 1990s Prince gained attention for changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, which he dumped in 2000.

His most recent industry-released album, 3121 (2006), Planet Earth (2007) and Lotus Flow3r/MPL Sound (2009) were all commercial successes in the US.

Prince released a free album in 2010 on the cover of European newspapers and magazines.

He is due to release his new album Planet electrum bsv and tour Northern America this year.

Contrary to the message in some of his song lyrics, Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001 and admitted to door-knocking to hand out religious material.
