Volvo Anode Kits – What You Need to Know

When it comes to boat zinc replacement, many people think that the only option is to buy a new anode. However, this isn’t always the case – you may be able to buy Volvo anode kits instead. Here’s what you need to know about these kits:

What Is a Volvo Anode Kit?

A Volvo anode kit is a replacement pack for the anodes on your Volvo Penta. Because you can purchase different size kits, it’s possible to set up your outdrive with one kit and then easily add more when necessary.

What Can You Use a Kit For?

Volvo anode kits are designed to replace old zincs in most Volvo Penta outdrives. You can buy Volvo anode kits to replace your old anodes, of course, but you can also use the kits to replace whatever size you require of Volvo Pentas’ standard zincs.

How Does It Work?

Volvo Penta outdrives are equipped with one anode for each prop-shaft unit. As the submerged part of your outdrive ages and corrodes, it will begin to eat away at the zinc plating.

When this happens, you’ll be faced with two options: replace your entire Volvo Penta anode or buy a new anode kit for boat zinc replacement. Replacing the whole unit is usually more expensive than buying a kit, and it can also be challenging to find the right size.

How Do You Install a Volvo Anode Kit?

Installing a Volvo anode kit is easy. You can probably do it yourself. All you need is a basic toolkit, some penetrating oil, and a Phillips head screwdriver.

First, find the outdrive and remove the screws holding in the two plugs covering your propeller shaft. Slide these plugs off and oil the exposed areas of your prop shaft.

Once this is done, use penetrating oil to lubricate the anode housing screws. These screws are designed to corrode over time, which can be prevented by penetrating oil.

After the screws have been given time to soak in, use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove them. If they’re too tight, you can use a wrench – but be careful not to strip the heads.

Remove the anode housing and slide the old anodes off of the shafts. Replace them with the new anodes from your Volvo anode kit, ensuring they’re properly aligned.

Replace the housing and tighten the screws using a Phillips head screwdriver or wrench. If you’ve installed them correctly, you’ll hear a ‘clicking’ noise as the screws are tightened.

Once this is done, reattach the plugs covering your propeller shaft. Finally, use some penetrating oil on your propeller to be safe.

Unless you have a big engine or an outdrive that’s seen a high amount of wear and tear, most boat owners only need one kit to maintain their Volvo Penta over time. When you need more than one kit, make sure to order the correct size – you don’t want to end up with an extra-large kit when you only need a small one.
