Final Verdict

For Windows and Mac users, My Book is straightforward to set up. All you need to do is just plug in the power cable and wire the USB Type-A to USB micro type B from the drive to your computer, and you are all set. The WD Discovery lets you see the available hard drive space and also enables you to set passwords and other WD utilities. The password you will set will be tied to your device, which allows you to login easily without any need to re-enter the password again. However, if you access it on any other machine, you have to re-enter the password. This functionality will make sure that if your drive gets stolen, nobody can access your data. It also enables you to import data from a cloud backup.

You can also install other WD utilities which include a backup tool, a security tool, and a general utility tool that can be used to perform various functions including RAID configurations. My Book is straightforward to use and configure. However, it comes with two significant downfalls which are redundancy and securing live data.

Backing up your data in one device has never been an ideal choice as the physical mechanisms of these drives can go wrong. So, always try to store your data in two places. Another disadvantage is the lack of a live backup solution. Other than these two disadvantages, My Book is an excellent buy to store 8TB of data at this price range.
