History of Legal Metrology Act

The Indian Legal Metrology Act 2009 is based on the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) Act, 1986. The ISI is a statutory body under the Department of Science & Technology. The ISI acts as a national standards board for India and it issues standards for products such as measuring instruments, measuring equipment, and measurement related technologies used in industries including manufacturing, trade and commerce, agriculture, manufacturing of food products and chemicals etc.

Legal metrology has been applied to various weight and measurements such as length/width, area, mass and volume. The Indian Legal Metrology Act 2009 provides for the metrology of goods in India. Standards have been drawn up in various sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food products, cosmetics and engineering. The ISI acts as a national standards board for India and it issues standards for products such as measuring instruments, measuring equipment, and measurement related technologies used in industries including manufacturing, trade and commerce, agriculture, manufacturing of food products and chemicals etc.

Legal Metrology Certificate

The legal metrology certificate is a certification that certifies the accuracy of measuring instruments used in trade and commerce. The certificate is issued by a competent authority or an authorized testing laboratory.

A legal metrology certificate is needed for various purposes such as:

  1. To measure goods for sale or to weigh goods in a retail outlet.
  2. To measure goods for export, import, or transit through India.
  3. To measure goods in transit through India.
