What is Load Balancer as a Service?

Although load balancing may be a new concept to some, it is not a new technology. It’s a method of being able to make resources highly available for when they are needed and are kept in a network. The way load balancing works is to use one or more load balancers to be able to offer clients a virtual server. The data is also backed up by real servers that act as a resource for the clients using it. What the load balancer does is to distribute the data over the server pools and, should they fail, reroute those requests so that the data can be sourced quickly. Clients are not informed which of the servers they are using and only the virtual server is displayed which avoids confusion.

Load balancing ensures that requests made to access saved data are not likely to fail due to resource contention. By scaling out the data, there are a number of servers that can be utilized to avoid problems and downtime. Load balancers can also be used to ensure visitors to web pages via the internet are served in a timely fashion despite how many people are looking for different things.

Before load balancing as a service, or LBaaS for short, there weredevices that were created to balance requests on physical server pools. Since the creation of the cloud, the load balancers can be used not as hardware, but as a service in itself. You are able to use the physical load balancers with virtual servers, and vice versa, making them an extremely useful tool.

By using virtual load balancers, you are able to access an on demand service. If your cloud is on a meter, you are able to save money by only paying for what you use. These are two of the most common benefits discussed when people speak about load balancing as a service.

If you use OpenStack load balancers, you will have a default balancing engine provided by TCP/HTTP. These are HAProxy load balancers which have access to the member servers so that client’s requests can be met without any delay in them receiving the information. A recent change made is ‘listeners’ being added which only takes requests from a specific port. Each load balancer can have just one listener but with this addition more listeners can be added per load balancer so that multiple requests can be made for different ports.

Another addition is the fact that you cannot use different implementation options which allows you to deploy instances of redundant load balancer deployments. With each and every day that goes by, developers are making changes to the load balancer as a service ensuring that it stays relevant and continues to grow with ever growing needs and technology. No one likes to request information and not get the immediate reply they wanted. With technology using a load balancer to equalize and improve reliability of servers is definitely a move set to take the future by storm.
