What is the importance of high speed steel?

High speed steel has been a favorite of clients for their fabrication and machining utilization. It is a type of tool steel alloy that has received its name due to its exceptional cutting speed, techniques and quality. It has the ability to cut objects much faster compared to the conventional high carbon steel used as cutting tool materials. It is primarily due to its high resistance against abrasion and wear, hot hardness and outstanding robustness that renders it tougher and better. The resistance to melt at extremely high temperatures is yet another reason why high speed steel has become so important and integral to industrial purposes.
1.Composition – High speed steel suppliers say that the unparalleled strength of the cutting tool owes to its composition. It is rich in alloy, specifically, tungsten and molybdenum. Chromium, vanadium and cobalt are also present, however, in lesser amount. The Rockwell hardness of high speed steel reaches up to 64 HRC even at room temperature. It is also quite high in carbon, consisting approximately 0.65% by weight. Nevertheless, in practical usage, high speed steel contains between 0.8% and 1.5% carbon. It is mandatory for this cutting tool to go through a hardcore heating treatment. The process generates a range of complex metallic carbides, particularly – vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum carbide which are suspended within a steel substrate. The beneficial result of the heat treatment is that, high speed steel has enhanced resistance against wears and exhibits extreme hardness.

Tools that are made of high speed steel give tough competition to high carbon steel. In fact, the former has improved properties and composition that makes it durable and flexible. There are a number of surface treatments available for high speed steel that can mould the cutting tool for specialized usage. The machinability is undeniable. Woodworking and machining high grade alloys can be easily done with this.
