Anemia can happen to anyone. However, pregnant women are more at risk of developing anemia . Anemia in pregnancy is common and can be prevented and treated easily.

Although relatively common, anemia in pregnant women cannot be taken lightly because if left unchecked it can lead to more severe conditions. Why are pregnant women at risk for anemia? Here’s the explanation!

1. Anemia during pregnancy
Anemia is a condition when there are not enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. The body is not getting enough oxygen causing the function of these organs to decline.

In Indonesia, based on Riskesdas data in 2018, the proportion of anemia in pregnant women in 2018 was 48.9 percent. This number has increased from 2013 which was 37.1 percent. Meanwhile, anemia in pregnant women based on age mostly occurred in the age range of 15 to 24 years, which was 84.6 percent.

3. Why are pregnant women at risk for anemia?
The Mayo Clinic explains that the body needs iron to produce hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. The presence of hemoglobin plays a role in carrying oxygen throughout the body.

Women who are pregnant are at risk for anemia because the body needs more blood for the baby’s growth. Because more blood is needed, more red blood cell-forming components are needed, one of which is iron. Therefore it is important to meet the needs of iron during pregnancy.

4. Dangers of anemia in pregnancy
Mild anemia can cause a person to feel tired. If the anemia experienced is getting worse and not treated, it can increase the risk of more serious complications.

Some complications due to anemia that are not treated during pregnancy include:

Premature birth.
Low birth weight.
Bleeding during childbirth.
Anemia and developmental delay in infants.

5. Overcoming anemia during pregnancy
Anemia during pregnancy can be prevented or treated easily. When a person is anemic during pregnancy, it is likely that the doctor will provide additional supplements such as iron supplements and/or folic acid supplements .

Your doctor may also suggest eating foods that contain iron. To determine the cause of anemia during pregnancy, you can consult a doctor.

When pregnant, the body will produce more red blood cells so that the need for iron and other nutrients as its constituent components will also increase. When the need for iron or other nutrients is lacking, pregnant women are at risk for anemia. Therefore, pregnant women need to meet the needs of iron and other important nutrients during pregnancy.
