Rohit Sharma Needs to See Out First Half an Hour of Day in Australia, Says Nasser Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed India’s limited-overs opener Rohit Sharma to open in Tests on India’s tour of Australia later this year. He also said that Rohit had to wait the first 30 minutes of the day to do well in Australia. Rohit, who had scored three centuries including a double hundred against South Africa at home in his debut as Test opener last October, had missed New Zealand due to his calf injury.

However, the Australia tour is going to be his first away Test as an opener. Rohit Sharma, who has become a vital cog of India in the limited-over cricket, has played just 32 Tests.

“If Rohit Sharma is not a Test match opener, I’ve been watching a different game… If you go and ask fellow cricketers who your favourite players, a lot of them will say, Rohit Sharma,” Hussain said in chat show on Sony Ten’s ‘Pit Stop’. “Fellow cricketers watch Rohit Sharma and say this bloke seems to have so much time to bat.”

He further added that Test match cricket needs time at the top of the order. He also said that he has to cover his off stump, like Virat Kohli did in England against Anderson. Even he said that Rohit has to do the same for while playing away from home. He had to spend half an hour during India’s four Tests in Australia where they played a day-night Test on the tour, at the Adelaide Oval from December 11-15.

He again said, “Australia, in general, is a very good place to bat and the one game where it might do a little bit is the day-night Test. So if you get an opportunity of it moving around, you better make sure you use it. Australia have gone on to No 1 in the Test rankings after the sandpaper gate scandal. I think it will be an incredibly watchable series.”
