What the Fashion Journal team will be shopping this Melbourne Fashion Week

The talent at the MFW Student Runway was wild - Fashion Journal

Runway to retail.

As an official media partner of this year’s Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW), the Fashion Journal team is getting excited for dynamic runways, interactive workshops and conversations centred around the future of sustainable fashion. Admittedly, fashion week is also an entirely valid excuse to freshen up our wardrobes, taking inspiration from the myriad of talented local designers showing on the Melbourne stage.

For more fashion news, shoots, articles and features, head to our Fashion section.
To celebrate the launch of this year’s highly-anticipated program (you can find our comprehensive guide here), the FJ team has pulled together a curated list of shoppable pieces from M/FW designers. Scroll on for colourful knits, elevated button-downs and an impeccable pair of tailored pants.

Ella Taverner, Fashion Journal’s Partnerships and Campaign Manager
A.BCH is one of my favourite labels to come out of Melbourne in the past few years. With people and the planet at its core, the brand is creating simple yet thoughtful designs that take supply chain transparency to a new level. I have my eye on this lightweight rib shirt in the marigold colourway. It’s made from superfine merino wool, meaning it’s figure-hugging in all the right places.

Verner Pintuck Tee

For someone with a weird affinity for striped tops, this gorgeous blue and white pintuck tee from Verner is right up my alley. I can see this slotting perfectly into my wardrobe as a great trans-seasonal layering piece, and something that will pair back nicely with my obscene number of denim pants. The multidirectional stripes create a fun, textural interest, and the extra-long sleeves look delightfully comfy.

Suku Home Jade Long Holiday Shirt

I’m a devoted button-up girlie – yank open my wardrobe doors and you’ll find endless variations of oversized, striped shirts. I never usually go for monochrome button-ups, but this jade green one from one of my favourite local labels, Suku Home, has been on my ‘to buy’ list since I first laid eyes on the label’s latest collection. It’s 100 per cent cotton poplin, and I’m particularly drawn to the loose, boxy fit, extra-long sleeves and contrasting white buttons.

Verner Pintuck Skirt

As I mentioned above, I’m a sucker for stripes, so this midi skirt from Verner’s latest collection is a must-have. I’m very into the blurry, soft edge stripe print and the elasticated waistband makes it well-suited for all the long summer lunches I have on the horizon (as I’m prone to bloating, a stretchy waistband is a must).

I’ve always been drawn to Arnsdorf’s designs, but it wasn’t until I splashed out on a few special pieces – the perfect black merino turtleneck and exquisitely tailored wool pants – that I was a convert. Their quality and fit blew me away, and I’ve since been eyeing off my next Arnsdorf purchase, the Suit Trouser in Fawn, ever since. Made from recycled polyester suiting, I can tell these will become another wardrobe staple for me. I’m picturing them with a pair of Adidas Sambas, a vintage baby tee and a cropped cardigan.

Mia Harrison, Fashion Journal intern
Aje Grande Intarsia Knit Jumper

I’ve always been told the secret to a successful wardrobe is making sure you acquire an excess of basics to mix and match – but I completely disagree. Nothing excites me more than seeing a baddie with an eclectic wardrobe, and as I move away from neutrals and start experimenting with a more diverse range of colours and style, this piece by Aje sticks out to me. Having bold colour on such delicate textured fabric is incredibly eye-catching.

While I’m usually wearing comfortable and androgynous fits in my day-to-day life, I absolutely love an opportunity to be feminine. This piece by Sister Studios encapsulates the perfect mix of elegance and coolness. It’s important to feel sexy – at least sometimes – and the classic square neck is a surefire way to accomplish that. This figure-hugging dress is gorgeous in its shape and feel, but equally as cool for its unique colour and vintage pattern.

For someone who’s never worked in a typical office, I have a surprising number of business shirts hanging in my wardrobe (also ties, because I’m waiting for Sk8r Boi style to make a comeback). They’re hot worn open over baggy jeans and a tight singlet or layered under a knitted vest, bomber jacket and the right amount of gold jewellery. This Red Flower Shirt from Melbourne-based label Moss Tunstall is the cool version of your quintessential light blue business shirt, elevated by designer Ajay Jenning’s colourful touch.
